A Glimpse into History One of the murals painted by famed artist Robert Dafford (located behind the Portsmouth Brewing Company). This mural depicts Shawnee State Forest. The Copperhead Lookout Fire Tower is in the upper left hand corner of the mural. Back in 1924, Ohio made history by erecting its very first fire tower, the incredible Copperhead Fire Tower, nestled in the stunning Shawnee State Forest! This magnificent 60-foot steel structure was strategically placed atop Copperhead Hill, soaring over 1200 feet above sea level. The combined height of the tower and hill created an unbeatable vantage point, allowing lookouts to gaze upon thousands of acres of Ohio’s lush forest! Copperhead Fire Tower marked the beginning of an ambitious project, becoming the first of 39 wildfire lookout towers strategically placed across Ohio’s beautiful forests. Can you believe it only cost about $1,100 to build this 60-foot marvel, covering materials, labor, and transportation? As technology advanced, aerial surveillance of wildfires by aircraft took flight in the 1940s, gradually phasing out Ohio’s beloved fire towers. The last of these historic towers closed its doors in 1978.
